Packaging printing

Packaging printing plays a decisive role in making products stand out on the market and capturing customers’ attention. Two of the leading printing processes in this field are digital printing and flexo printing. Christiansen Print offers you both technologies using the high-quality preprint process. In addition, we work with reliable converting partners, so that you can also carry out extensive projects with us that go beyond printed paper rolls.

Packaging printing in preprint

Preprint packaging printing has moved the printing stage to an earlier point in the production process. First, the liner paper rolls are printed; these are then used later in corrugated cardboard production. The best-known advantage of preprint: even at low grammages, no so-called ‘washboard effect’ occurs in packaging printing.

What is digital printing?

Digital printing is a non-contact printing process. This means that no separate image carrier / printing form is required. The print image is transferred directly from the computer to the printing press. In terms of resolution, digital printing is comparable to offset printing. Digital printing is therefore ideally suited to high-quality packaging and displays.

What digital printing makes possible

  • Personalised printing: Whether seasonal displays, special sales promotions, regional campaigns or packaging designed by customers with their own text and images – with personalisation, segmentation and versioning, every customer communication becomes responsive and precise.
  • Multiple jobs on one roll: In the multi-lane process, different print jobs in a wide variety of batch sizes and formats can be printed in parallel.
  • Large-format printing: In theory, the full print length of an entire paper roll – i.e. 8,000 metres – can be printed. There is no need to prepare printing forms or printing plates; a print-ready PDF is sufficient.
  • Codes in the print image: Whether EAN codes, QR codes or special requests – even variable codes, each of which is unique. This makes it possible to trace packaging (Track & Trace) or to address customers directly, for example with promotions or digital operating instructions.
  • Anti-counterfeiting protection: Every single print image can be provided with individual, hidden security features without altering its visual appearance or impairing the quality of the print image.
  • Printing solid board: We also print or finish solid board weighing up to 400 g/m² directly – e.g. for folding boxes, trays, special editions and promotional packaging.
  • Small batch sizes: Whether short or long print runs – your print products can be produced flexibly on the digital press: no printing plates or flexo printing plates, no colour mixing and no minimum order quantity. This makes even the shortest runs possible.

Flexo printing

An unusual format, spot colours or particularly large batch sizes: flexo printing can deliver any preprint project at optimum cost, regardless of its complexity, and is the first choice for many packaging projects in terms of quality and efficiency.

Mounting a flexo printing plate

What flexo printing makes possible

  • Large production volumes: Flexo printing has become established as a proven method in packaging printing, especially for larger production volumes. The relief printing technology enables efficient mass production of packaging combined with high printing speeds.
  • Spot colours, coatings and varnishes: Printing with up to 8 colours and varnish. By using different materials, flexo printing covers a broad range of applications – accordingly, the papers can also be given various coatings and varnishes.
  • Formats: 250 cm paper width and infinitely variable print lengths of up to 206 cm.
  • Paper sacks and bags: Whether for the food, agricultural or retail sector – we offer tailor-made printing solutions for paper sacks and paper bags. The flexo printing process makes it possible to print papers with grammages from 60 to 250 g/m².
  • Gradients: Our SteppedHex anilox rollers improve the printing quality of gradients thanks to a higher 460 L/cm screen ruling and ensure homogeneous ink transfer.

What is the optimum printing technology for your packaging?

The choice between digital printing and flexo printing depends on the individual requirements of your specific product. For tailor-made designs and optimum utilisation across different jobs, digital printing is the ideal choice. If, on the other hand, you are focusing on efficient mass production and need larger quantities, flexo printing offers the productivity required.

Paper coating in practice

ComBa Liner is used as a coated paper with a barrier effect in a wide variety of industries – both as the inner liner of a solid board box for food and in the inner liner of corrugated packaging for oily engines. Do you need corrugated cardboard packaging for direct food contact, or transportation packaging for your fertiliser products, wood products or machine parts? Coated papers can be used here too.

The coated paper ComBa Liner can be used in any application where a barrier is required. We will be happy to work with you to identify where you can do without the composite packaging you have been using.

Technical facts

The grammages of the coated papers vary depending on the application and intended use. A coating can be applied to brown and white paper; standardised corrugated base papers are commonly used. The barrier effect of ComBa Liner can be achieved with various paper grammages. The coated papers can be produced in a width of 2.50 metres, thus offering ideal conditions for utilisation in packaging production.
